Picture a doctor doing the morning rounds, updating medical records as he walks past each patient. Thanks to Anoto functionality, he can now store that information digitally. Or an ambulance crew, busy with a patient, instantly sending vital information to the emergency room. Sometimes a time saver can be a life saver.

Not
long ago, you were the one cradling a newborn. Now your little girl is cradling
her infant child. You see an ad in the paper for flowers. As luck would have
it, it's printed under the Anoto pattern. All you do is jot down your message,
fill in the coupon, pick the flowers and place your order. Doesn't time fly?

Applications of the global technology can be divided into three main groups: analog output, global communication and paper-based e-services. Within these groups, the application potential is virtually unlimited.
Analog
output Applications of this type involve using
the pen and paper mainly as input devices to a computer, handheld device
or mobile phone. Text and sketches, in your notepad for example, are transferred
exactly as you have written them via a Bluetooth radio link directly to your
computer as soon as you tick the appropriate check-box. Different check-boxes
may be present on the notepad paper to initiate certain actions needed for
the notes. One example is to write an address in block letters and then tick
the "Address" check-box on the paper with the pen. The address will then be
copied into your computer's addressbook in the correct format. A similar scenario
would be to have a "To do" check-box on the paper. On your computer, the
notes, calendar sheets, etc., are digitally filed as images, but with the
possibility to search for key words that were entered as block letters and
for the date the note was written.
Examples: Notepads and organizers
Global
Communication Your Anoto pen and paper constitute
your portal to global communication. The input from your Anoto pen can be
transformed to a fax message, a graphical e-mail or a short message* to a
mobile phone. These applications require more 'intelligence' from the paper
and also access to the Internet. Sheets, e.g. in your organizer, can be prepared
as forms for sending a graphical e-mail, short message or fax. There are
entry fields on the page for block letters stating addressee and subject,
a free message area and appropriate check-boxesWhen the entry fields are
completed and the message written, a mark in the check-box will trigger the
pen to establish contact with your mobile phone over a Bluetooth radio link.
The pen performs a look-up at the Anoto Look-up Service, which keeps track
of which Service Provider handles what services, and then sends the data
to the Mail Server responsible for the graphical e-mail service. The address
field is decoded and the message dispatched over the Internet to the addressee.
A confirmation of delivery to the Internet is shown on the mobile phone display.
Examples: graphical e-mail, SMS and fax * (Short Message Service, SMS,
is text that can be sent between mobile phones and displayed. It is a service
provided by GSM technology.)
Paper
Based e services One example of a paper-based
e-service could be an advertisement in a magazine, perhaps combined with an
order form. With parts of the advert printed on the Anoto pattern, you can
request additional information by stating your address and ticking a box.
In an advertisement for flowers, an order for roses with worldwide delivery
may be present. The delivery address is stated along with the credit card
no., expiry date and the number of roses. Finally, a personal handwritten
message or drawing is entered for the included greetings card. In the case
above, the Anoto Look-up Service decodes the information and forwards the
request, addresses information and completed greeting card to the server of
the advertising company. Here, the credit card is billed and a delivery order
to a nearby local flower shop is issued, including the greetings card.
Examples: electronic payment, advertisements, menus and order forms.
Companies can also use the technology to create customized and very powerful
systems for data collection, document/goods tracking and journal keeping.
