Can I use 2 USB scanners at once in Windows XP?
Microsoft say this is NOT possible.
What minimum RAM do you recommend to use with OpticFilm 7200? I have a 60MB RAM computer with USB1 connectivity .. will this be suitable? (Hugh Winnan, October 2004)
60MB PC Random Access Memory (RAM) will be able to cope with ~23MB image files sizes which will be created from a full frame 35mm 24-bit 2400dpi scan. This size file gives A4 prints (printed at 300ppi) or A3 preview prints (printed at 200ppi). (detail)
DataMind recommend PC RAM to be x 2 - 3 image file size. 500MB RAM should cope with 200MB images and 1GB RAM will handle 400MB files. If you crop 35mm film, file size and PC RAM memory required will be proportionally smaller. DataMind recommend Offtek.co.uk to quickly check cost of desktop memory. As a rough guide (October 2004) - £100-£150 buys 500MB (price vary by PC model & memory speed).
A 24-bit full frame 35mm scan at 7200dpi is around 200MB; 48-bit scans are 400MB (detail). A 200MB file (24-bit) will print to A1 34" x 23" size (detail). With 7200 dpi scan you can CROP a 35mm slide by a quarter to still give A3 prints (detail)
A PC with USB1 will work fine with OpticFilm 7200. For quicker transfer of scans to PC consider buying a 5 port USB2 card - around £30. Hi-Speed USB or USB2 is forty times faster than USB1. With USB1 a 150MB file will transfer in 100 seconds; with USB2 the transfer takes 2.5 seconds!
